Junior quarterback Rhys Gervais has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Week due to his efforts in Sept. 24’s 58-13 win over Lake Erie College.
“I felt very comfortable with our game plan going into the game,” said Gervais. “I have to give a bunch of credit to my teammates because we were all dialed in and firing on all cylinders throughout the entire game.”
In the course of the game, Gervais completed 20 of 26 passes for 324 yards. Gervais threw for more than 300 yards for the eighth time in his career, a new University of Findlay record. While throwing for many passing yards, the junior quarterback also threw for five touchdown passes to four different receivers. Sept. 24 was the third time in his career he has thrown for five touchdowns in one game.
“I felt like I had a really good relationship with my wide receivers timing-wise,” said Gervais. “Based on their defense, I felt confident in our passing game and I think that allowed us to have a good game in the air.”
To make this feat even more impressive, Gervais only played one half of the game because the Oilers were winning big with a score of 35-0 at half time.
“It’s really all in his preparation,” said wide receiver Jason Moore. “He studies a ton of film and has a feel for what’s going on and it translates well in the game.”
Moore has been a receiver for Gervais and the Oilers for multiple seasons and believes in the abilities of his quarterback.
“He has confidence in the looks he’s seen which allows us to go out there and connect on drives,” said Moore.
The Oilers will compete on their home field again on Saturday, Oct. 15 against Hillsdale at 2 p.m.
