    To the Editor:
I would like to commend the students of the SGA who took the initiative to write a letter to Rep. Sprague regarding House Bill 53. It is absolutely inspiring to see young people, who are our future leaders, become involved with government and politics and who take it upon themselves to try and bring about a better world. I would ask of the inspiring young leaders who took the time to write and sign this letter to be just as concerned and active when you see other policies being enacted around the country to make it more difficult to exercise the right to vote. Based on the past two election cycles it has become obvious that many politicians around the country are interested in limiting, not expanding, the right to vote for many of our fellow citizens. These include elimination of “motor voter” laws, requirements for a government-issued ID card, shortening or even eliminated expanded voting periods, not allowing Sunday voting, etc. I expect this trend will continue and expand as we approach the 2016 presidential election. I would plead with all young leaders on campus to remember how you felt when your right to vote was restricted and to show the same spirit of activism to defeat laws solely intended to interfere with the right to vote. Become just as motivated when the right to vote of the inner-city grandmother in Cleveland or the Hispanic farm worker in Texas is restricted as you were when this law affected college students. There has never been a time in my life when the sacred right to vote has come under so much attack in this country. Please stay involved, become leaders in this battle, and remember that the right to vote is our best defense against tyranny and is what separates us from many other countries around the world.
