Oilers softball rode a nine-game win streak to a 12-3 record, showcasing their dominance early in the season. At the same time, baseball looks to carry its resilience into their first round of conference play this weekend despite dealing with early injuries and tough losses.
Softball started strong, going 8-2 over spring break in Florida. Their deep roster of 15 to 16 contributors has kept the Oilers working through a tough early schedule.
“We are even all around, so it’s easy for our coach to sub players in and out and still win,” said sophomore Meghan Heinman.
The Oilers entered the season needing pitchers, and freshmen Kaylann Carter and Sophie Petton have contributed alongside seniors Alexys Antal and Kayla Dykin. Freshman Jenna Dee has also stepped up as a catcher and a reliable hitter.
The team’s focus at practice has been primarily on line drives and ground balls, which has translated to strong defense this season. Their performance against Bridgeport stands out, as they hit well and played lockdown defense in a 17-4 win.
Heading into two regional doubleheaders this weekend, the Oilers softball team brings confidence from its strong start, as the baseball squad aims to carry its momentum through its own challenging stretch.
Although baseball has faced early injuries and tough losses, pitching coach Brant Mullins is confident in the group’s response. The demanding schedule has sharpened the Oilers as they approach their first conference series.
“We are prepared to deal with whatever is thrown at us,” said Mullins.
With limited innings and at-bats, players support each other by always being ready. Trust and teamwork have been central to their response to adversity.
Junior shortstop Nick Palm has stepped up as a leader, hitting .377 as a leadoff hitter and earning G-MAC Athlete of the Week after a standout performance against Gannon. Senior reliever Colin Becker has also built momentum heading into conference play, earning G-MAC Athlete of the Week against McKendree. Sophomore pitchers Aiden Kiessling and David Jimenez are progressing after returning from Tommy John surgery, while catchers Isaac Ramos and Keegan Snyder have impressed behind the plate.
Baseball heads to Malone for a four-game conference series beginning March 14, while softball stays home to face Davenport on Saturday and Parkside on Sunday. Both programs carry momentum and confidence into the biggest stretch of their seasons, looking to build on their recent successes.
