The University of Findlay has expanded its Derrick Dollars program with the addition of two new off-campus locations, Power Up Cafe and Main Street Deli and Arcade, giving students more flexibility in their campus dining funds.
With the additions, ten restaurants across Findlay now accept Derrick Dollars. The expansion is part of an ongoing effort by the university’s dining services and marketing team to respond to student needs while strengthening community relationships in Findlay.
“We recognize that eating on campus everyday can get mundane, and although we try our best to keep things fresh and exciting, we also recognize the importance of exploring the dining options around the city of Findlay”, wrote Riley Hale, field marketing coordinator for Sodexo Dining Services in an email.
“The primary advantage of the off-campus Derrick Dollar program for the University is the increase in student satisfaction,” Hale wrote. “We hope students see the value in purchasing a campus meal plan and are encouraged to explore their off-campus dining options.”
Several factors are considered before adding a new restaurant to the off-campus dining program.
“Partnerships are selected based on student feedback as well as an interest from both the restaurant and the University”, wrote Hale.
“We certainly do our research into each business before moving forward with adding them to ensure the decision is worth the commitment on both sides,” wrote Hale.
“When the manager/owner of a restaurant reaches out, they meet with David P Harr, Director of Dining Services, to discuss the program and what is required from the establishment in terms of insurance, financial responsibility, technology requirements, etc,” wrote Hale. “Both parties then review the information discussed and if both agree to move forward, a contract is written up and equipment is ordered.”
Not only do the partnerships bring more options to students but it continues to strengthen bonds between the University and the city’s businesses, local and chain.
“The program helps build brand awareness, customer loyalty, and of course, increase sales. This positive impact is seen year round, not just during the academic year”, wrote Hale.
While student feedback plays a vital role in selections, Hale notes that variety is also a key factor.
“Domino’s and East of Chicago both offer a large selection of pizza to those taking advantage of the program. Because of this, when adding additional options to the program, we would likely investigate opportunities featuring different menu items.”
Students have expressed positive reactions to the added locations, increasing the convenience and excitement of Derrick Dollars.
For Oliver Ponczocha, sophomore forensic biology major, Derrick Dollars are a regular part of their weekly routine.
“I use my Derrick Dollars at least three or four days a week,” said Ponczocha.
“It is very useful for the equestrian majors ’cause we have long hours at the farm and when we get back, sometimes the dining hall is closed. So being able to grab something with Derrick Dollars, like Domino’s is great,” said Eleanore Siar, a freshman western equestrian major.
Both expressed excitement over the new Power Up Cafe location.
“Although I haven’t been there yet, I know they have smoothies, and there aren’t a lot of places around here that have fun options like that,” said Siar.
“It was just a very nice atmosphere and good experience, and I am excited that Derrick Dollars now include Power Up Cafe,” said Ponczocha.
The program will continue to evolve as dining services gather feedback from students, with the potential to have additional locations added in the future if demand supports it.
“Students absolutely have a say in what businesses are added to the program,” wrote Hale. “The best way to share feedback with our dining services team is to attend our monthly SPICE Meetings, texting “ufstudents” to 82257 or send a direct message to @oilereats on Instagram.” SPICE stands for Students Particularly Interested in Culinary Excellence, and is the student advisory board for UF Dining Services.
The next SPICE meetings are scheduled for Feb. 10, March 10, and APril 14 in CBSL 120 from 7 to 8 p.m.
