Softball sweeps, Baseball breaks streak

Softball:

The University of Findlay softball team extended its winning streak to eight after its two-game sweep against Wayne State University. Both games were tight, but the Oilers secured wins with 4-3 and 5-3 wins.

The Oilers had multiple standout performances. In game one, Annika Bredel had her tenth leadoff home run of the season, one shy of the program record. Freshman Kaylynn Carter had a two-run home run, followed by Graduate Student Cassie Warner stealing home, extending the Oilers’ lead to 4-1. However, Wayne State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, making it 4-3. Carter earned her first career save by retiring six batters after relieving Aleys Antal during the sixth inning.

In game two, the Oilers had an early 3-0 lead, which was kept until the bottom of the sixth, where it became tied. The Oilers secured two more runs, making it 5-3 going into the last inning. After Wayne scored again, Kayla Dykin was called in, closing out the second game. Her strikeout added to her seven-pitch strikeout of the game, earning her eighth career save, setting a new record for the program.

Baseball:

The baseball team last faced Tiffin, where they split the games with a 4-3 win and an 8-4 loss. The Oilers set a program record with a 12-game win streak, but lost it after their second game against Tiffin. Carson Mellot was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Midwest Region Pitcher of the Week. Mellot was also named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Athlete of the Week.

In game two, he threw a complete-game one-hitter shutout, which is the fewest in a complete game since 2016 for UF. Mellott struck out 10 players over seven innings, allowing just one hit. Drew Tucker was also named G-MAC athlete of the week after assisting the team with six hits and scoring seven runs, a team high.

Track and Field:

The Oilers competed at the Oliver Nikoloff Invite in Cincinnati last weekend, ending the meet with nine event wins and twelve NCAA provisional marks. In the April 7 poll, the women were ranked 23rd and the men 19th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Eyan Wilson was named G-MAC Field athlete of the week after his mark of 17.63 meters in the shot put that won the event and put him ninth nationally in Division II. The team will be split across the country, sending four groups to separate meets. The Oilers will be traveling to Grand Valley, April 10-11, Bucknell University, April 11, Northern Kentucky University, April 11, and the University of Tennessee, April 10-11.

Tennis:

The men’s tennis team swept Kentucky Wesleyan College 7-0, making their record 10-6 overall and 5-1 within conference matches. The men didn’t lose a single set throughout both doubles and singles play.

The women also beat KWC 7-0, extending their win streak to 13. The women are ranked 10th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national poll. Their record is 14-1 overall, and they have an undefeated mark within conference play of 6-0. The Oilers will face Walsh University at home on April 11 at 12 pm.

Lacrosse:

The lacrosse team lost 10-6 to Davenport, making their record 6-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference, as the matchup was not a part of the official conference play. Sophomore Caroline Weber was named the G-MAC Athlete of the Week. She assisted in the Oilers’ previous wins against Ursuline and Lake Erie, allowing only 3 goals combined in her 60 minutes of playtime during the two games. Findlay will face Northwood on April 10 to make up for the Mar 28 game that was rescheduled.

Golf:

The Oilers co-hosted the Findianapolis Intercollegiate tournament, with the University of Indianapolis, where both the men’s and women’s teams placed first. Junior Ashleigh Duflo was this week’s G-MAC athlete of the week after her performance at the tournament. She placed first for the third time this season and beat out the competition with an even par. Second and third place went to seniors, Ellie Yeazell and Hayley Dye. Senior Luke Metzger also took home the individual win with a -2 mark, beating out a competitive field. The Oilers will return April 12-13 for their last regular season tournament at the Wright State Invitational.\
