The University of Findlay women’s golf team is off to a strong start this spring season, showcasing their skills on the course.
The women’s team is currently ranked fifth in the NCAA DII Women’s golf poll among some of the top collegiate teams in the nation.
“We have one of the top programs in DII for women’s golf,” said UF Women’s Golf Head Coach Dominic Guarnieri. “We’re currently ranked fourth in one poll in the country and fifth in another.”
The women’s team started the season busy, playing in a DI tournament and their home spring invitational. Team members impressed with their performances in the first few tournaments.
The Oilers placed fourth at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona back in February. In their second tournament of the Spring season, the Findlay Spring Invite, the women’s team came in second place.
With such a strong start to the spring season, the women’s team has some big goals it is working towards.
After playing in a D1 tournament at the season’s start, the team looks forward to another in April at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational, hosted by Ohio State.
“I have a good relationship with the coaches [at Ohio State] and asked if we could play,” said Guarnieri. “Getting to play at Ohio State’s golf course against a lot of schools in the BIG 10 is going to be super exciting.”
As they prepare for the postseason, the team seems to be most excited about having a chance to play in the National Championships.
“Winning the women’s golf national championships is obviously one of our biggest goals,” said junior Ellie Yeazell.
Not only do all of the players hope to make it to the National Championship, but they each have their own individual goals as well.
“One of my goals for myself is to get GMAC Freshman of the Year,” said freshman Avery Thompson. “I would also like to earn the award of GMAC Player of the Year.”
Excited for the season ahead, teammates focus on preparing for the postseason. Despite strong spring performances, they continue to work hard to improve their skills.
“Whenever we are not competing, we are practicing,” said Yeazell. “All of us always do extra practice on our own. We try to sneak in as much practice as possible.”
A strict practice schedule helps the team on the golf course and builds their confidence.
“Coming to UF, I knew we had a strong team, so I’ve been building my confidence to accomplish more of my goals like getting the top five,” said Thompson.
While aiming to win the National Championship again, the women’s team hopes to grow individually and as a team through their season experiences. For the Oilers, on- and off-course experiences matter most.
“The biggest thing I want to leave players with when they leave here [UF] is the experience,” said Guarnieri. “Getting to play in D1 tournaments and making it to the National Championship are going to be exciting experiences for the team.”
