UF Baseball aiming for home runs near home

In recent years, UF Baseball gained recognition for travelling south during spring break, often heading to Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee for games. This year, the baseball team remains in the Ohio area, which Head Coach Matt Palm provides further details.

“We started looking at staying more north with spring break being moved to later in the spring semester,” Palm said. “The second weekend of our break is the start of our conference schedule.”

Travelling south for games during spring break has become a tradition.

“I am unaware of when the last time the team did not go South for spring break,” Palm said. “Many D2 schools are playing more typical non-conference weekends and not traveling to Florida.”

Despite the change in location, the team continues to prepare for games as usual.

“(It) doesn’t change in the way we prepare or play,” Palm said. “We were able to put together a great schedule by playing four non-conference weekends. Every opponent was in their conference tournament, five competed in a Regional, three played in super Regionals and one team played in the World Series.”

Even though the team won’t travel south this year, they will reevaluate for the following seasons.

“I’m sure our players were disappointed that we are not playing down South.  Everyone wants to play in warm weather,” Palm said. “A southern trip just did not work in this year’s schedule. It will be considered in the future.”

UF Baseball is already slated to open in 2026 at Wingate in North Carolina.

The team opened last weekend in Cincinnati and currently stands at 1-1. Their next game is against Lewis on Feb. 22.
