University of Findlay president Dr. Katherine fell sent out an email Friday afternoon preparing campus for the Polar Vortex next week.
While the University is already closed on January 20 due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Tuesday campus will also be closed due to the predicted cold temperatures.
Chief Meteorologist at Spectrum News Ohio Eric Elwell says Ohio will see the coldest wind chill values in several years early next week. Wind chill is expected to drop well below zero by Monday morning and may not come back above zero until as late as Thursday.
On Facebook he posts, “Some of our models show wind chills perhaps as cold as -20 (or even colder) by Tuesday morning. The European model (posted) is quite extreme and may be a bit too extreme – but if the readings are even somewhat close, it is extremely dangerous. In fact, actual temperatures may struggle to get above zero on Tuesday in parts of northern Ohio.”
Fell’s statement said, “For in-person classes, instructors may choose to post videos, notes, or alternate assignments to Canvas. Students are responsible for checking Canvas and email for messages from their instructors.”
She also gave direction for students responsible for animals at the Western Farm and the English Farm saying those students should get information directly from the staff at the farm concerning protocols and procedures for animal care during inclement weather. “Students can call the farm weather hotline 419-434-4846 to determine if farm classes will be held. The hotline will be updated before classes begin.”
Henderson Dining Hall will be open to provide food for on-campus residents.
If for any reason buildings should lose power, those on campus can gather at the AMU as it has a generator and will be able to provide warmth and shelter.
Fell reminded everyone to make sure their mobile number is updated in Workday so they can receive Oiler Alerts. “Updates and relevant information will be provided via Oiler Alert,” according to Fell.
