TRAGEDY: a tragedy starts now

Anyone in need of a good laugh, the theatre production is now showing TRAGEDY: a tragedy through Sunday. Director and theatre program coordinator Cynthia Stroud describes this play.

“It is night and after darkness falls, it stays down. No one can be certain the sun will ever return,” Stroud said. “In the absurdist comedy, newscasters attempt to report on the unfolding crisis, which may or may not be the end of the world.”

The play shows on Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the John and Hester Powell Grimm Theatre. Tickets are available at the Marathon Center for Performing Arts or at the door.

“I’m excited to see all our hard work come to fruition,” Stroud said. “We’ve been rehearsing for five weeks and we are ready for an audience.”

General admission into the place costs $8; however, admission for UF students, faculty and staff is free with their ID.

Seven students will perform onstage during the play with another dozen students helping out backstage. Additionally, the sets and costumes were constructed by 30 theatre scholarship students.

Even with the help of many students, they still had to overcome different setbacks that came their way. Stroud described how they overcame setbacks, including incorporating technology.

“Because the show is a news broadcast, we have incorporated quite a bit of technology onstage,” Stroud said. “It took some time to get all of the projections, sound effects, music, and lighting coordinated. Our stage manager, Jaylesiyah Barner-Moon is doing an amazing job of making it all happen.”
