Meet Vice President Kamala Harris

*The Pulse is exploring the policy statements from each major candidate in the 2024 presidential race. This article breaks down the issues from Vice President Kamala Harris. 

Kamala Harris made history as the first Black South Asian American woman to be elected to the position of Vice President. She is now attempting to make more history by running for President in the 2024 election.   

Vice President Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California Hastings College of Law, according to the White House 

In 1990, Vice President Harris worked in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office specializing in the prosecution of child sexual assault cases.  

Moving into 2004, Vice President Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco where she worked for LQBTQ+ rights after the overturn of Proposition 8. Vice President Harris was elected as the Attorney General of California in 2010 where she defended the Affordable Care Act.  

During 2017, Vice President Harris was sworn into the United States Senate. During her time in the Senate, she worked with legislation to fight against hunger, provide rent relief, and care for small businesses.    

Working as Vice President, Harris has led the discussion in the fight for freedom for women. From decisions regarding their body and voice, and how to access safe clean water and air.  

Harris and Biden together capped the cost of insulin at $35 per month for the senior population, which improved the price of prescription costs and expanded Medicaid postpartum care.  

While running for President, Vice President Harris says she has a goal of building up the middle class and bringing down costs and economic security for everyone.  Her platform includes: 

  • Establishing lower taxes for the working middle class while also lowering the needs of everyday life.  
  • Making rent more affordable and home ownership available.
  • Growing small businesses and investing in entrepreneurs.  
  • Making resources more affordable and to give support to those who are working hard to earn a living.  
  • Restoring and protecting reproductive freedoms after the overturn of Roe v. Wade.  
  • Working to keep America safe and prosperous by investing in America as well as ensuring the Safety of Americans for equality for all.
