The University of Findlay Women’s Golf Team finished ninth out of fifteen teams in their first tournament of the season held at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, In. on Sept. 11-12.
Mackenzie Torres, a junior from Grove City, Oh., lead the way for the Oilers with scores of 76-74 for a two-day total of 150. The Lady Oilers showed some consistency during their first tournament of the year as they posted scores of 312 and 311, respectively, for an overall tournament score of 623. The tournament field consisted of seven teams that finished last season ranked in the national top 25.
Last season, the Lady Oilers’ scoring average was 305.21 per eighteen holes. Thus far, through the first event of the season, the team is trailing that mark at 311.5. The Oilers had another opportunity this week to build on their first performance as they hosted the GMAC Invitational at the Findlay Country Club on Sept. 18-19.
This was be the first such tournament to feature the new teams in the GMAC and provided an early season look at how the Oilers measure up to the other teams in the conference.
According to Head Coach Dominic Guarnieri the Lady Oilers need to stay focused on the task at hand.
“Mentally we have to make sure we don’t let bad shots affect us and take it one shot at a time,” said Guarnieri. “If we just play our game and focus on what we need to do then we will be fine.”
According to Guarnieri, the Lady Oilers excel at handling adversity, specifically bad weather.
“The team excels in many aspects of the game but I would say the number one thing is their ability to handle any weather condition which is very important in golf. They do not let rain, wind, cold etc. affect them,” explained Guarnieri.
After the GMAC Invitational the lady Oilers take a break as they do not play again until Oct. 9th as they host the Bing-Beall Fall Classic at the Findlay Country Club. Going forward, the team will be looking to build upon their performance in Indiana and put together a strong effort next week in the GMAC invite.
